5 Reasons to Visit Mackinac Island

5 Reasons to Visit Mackinac Island

Are you looking for a vacation spot that's full of natural beauty, history, and adventure? Look no further than Mackinac Island, a charming island nestled between Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas. Here are five reasons why you should add Mackinac Island to your travel bucket list:

1. Stunning natural scenery

Mackinac Island is known for its picturesque landscapes, from the crystal-clear waters of Lake Huron to the rugged shoreline and lush forests. Be sure to take a stroll through the island's many parks and gardens, including the beautiful Mackinac Island State Park, where you can enjoy stunning views of the Mackinac Bridge and the surrounding islands.

Speaking of gardens - you CAN'T miss the amazing Lilac bushes throughout the island in the summer time. Not only are the flowers so beautiful, but they smell incredible! If you love this scent like I do, you can have the scent in your home year-round with our Bastille Lilac bar!

2. No cars, no problem

One of the unique things about Mackinac Island is that cars are not allowed on the island. Instead, visitors and locals get around by foot, bike, or horse-drawn carriage. This means that the island is much quieter and more peaceful than many other vacation destinations. You'll have plenty of space to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings without the noise and traffic of cars.

3. Delicious food and drink

No vacation is complete without great food and drink, and Mackinac Island has plenty of options to choose from. Whether you're looking for classic fudge, fresh-caught fish, or a locally brewed beer, you'll find it on the island.

My personal favorite is getting a large scoop of Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream in a Waffle cone (YUM!), and a close second is a piece of classic chocolate fudge!

I typically eat the ice cream so quickly (because it's amazing) & forget to take a picture, but our Mint Chip Ice Cream bar gives you a good idea of what the ice cream looks & smells like (just please don't eat the soap!).

 4. Step back in time

Mackinac Island has a rich history that dates back to the 17th century. It was a strategic location for fur trading, military control, and commerce, and its heritage is still visible today in the many historic buildings, forts, and museums on the island. Take a guided tour, explore on your own, or attend one of the island's many cultural events to learn more about the history and culture of this unique place.

Growing up, I spent a lot of time boating on the Great Lakes, so one of the historic buildings that is near & dear to my heart is the Mackinac Island Yacht Club (MIYC).

Founded in 1924 by a group of sailing enthusiasts who shared a passion for racing on the waters of Lake Huron, the club has hosted many prestigious sailing events, including the annual Chicago to Mackinac Race, which is one of the oldest freshwater distance races in the world.

5. Outdoor activities for everyone

Whether you're an avid hiker, a leisurely biker, or a water sports enthusiast, Mackinac Island has something for you. The island is home to miles of scenic trails for hiking and biking, as well as opportunities for kayaking, sailing, and fishing on the surrounding waters. In the winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are popular activities, and the island's famous ice bridge offers a unique opportunity for winter adventure.
